Growing up the youngest of four girls, I knew one thing: poor ol' Dad
never stood a chance. The first dozen years or so were the easiest,
I'm sure, but try to imagine being the only male in a house full of
females, where the mood-swinging pendulum swung with such force that
it shocked us all it didn't fly right off its doo-dicker.
We managed to survive and are now all married with kids of our own--
payback, you might say. My husband and I have three boys, so needless
to say, our lives are never boring. The other day I was walking with
my youngest (he's 6), and completely out of the blue, he says, "I hate
it when I get a fart stuck in my butt." I'm sure a "good mother"
would have taken the opportunity to explain that topics such as these
are not recommended in polite society, but it's a little hard to say
anything when you're doubled over laughing in the middle of the
street. Such is life in the Drewry house; farts, burps, Pokemon, Harry
Potter, and anything that includes light sabers, or swords fights.
Over the years, I've worked as a chamber maid in Whistler Village,
worn a lovely uniform of orange and brown polyester as I made hot dogs
at a local Orange Julius, spent endless summer sorting screws into
their specific bins, and worked my fair share of retail, all the while
making mental notes of the characters I worked with, for, or served.
It wasn't until our second child was born, and we'd just moved
hundreds of miles away from our family, that I started to toy with the
idea that I might be able to put certain characteristics together to
form 'people'. The first attempt was an unmitigated disaster.
The rewrites of that first book were worse. Needless to say, it has
found a comfortable home tucked in the bottom of my file cabinet where
it will gladly spend the rest of its days (and mine). A sane person
would simply destroy it, but I never claimed to be sane.
Several years, several books, and a lot more than several rejections later, I sold one of my books. Here Comes the Bride, was released in May, 2005, and Charming Jo was released in September, 2006. 2008 brings two new books; The Devil's Daughter which was released in
April, and my brand new release, Dancing with the Devil.
